Most of us wouldn’t think twice about having our jewelry appraised for insurance purposes. Some other valuables around the home may have been appraised as well, such as paintings, sculptures, antique furniture or a new flat screen TV. So why don’t we take the same consideration with our textile treasures?
I thought it was important to mention this topic because there have been many devastating fires throughout Texas this summer. In fact, there have been catastrophies throughout our great country all year.
Quilts, new or antique, small or large, can hold significant value. Appraisals place an absolute value on that quilt which, while not enabling your great grandmothers quilt to reappear after a loss, it may ensure you can have a similar quilt as a replacement without taking from your pockets in time of crisis. Even if your quilt is not antique, it still has replacement value that is important to note.
In fact, if you possess a quilt for auction or sale of some sort, it is important to get not only a replacement value appraisal, but an income potential appraisal. This documents the value of the quilt if it were lost, stolen, damaged, etc. prior to raising the capital expected from the event.
A true appraisal will be from a professional, and will usually take about thirty minutes. You most likely will not receive the paperwork or value information at the time of the appraisal, but later in the mail. A professional appraiser will not give a verbal value.
When you receive your appraisal, it will include: a completed sheet of information regarding the quilt, a photograph of the quilt, a biography of the appraiser and resume. You should also receive a sort of disclaimer sheet that will provide you with a bit of additional information.
Besides satisfying your curiosity, a quilt appraisal will also provide you needed documentation, which once your quilt is lost, damaged or destroyed, cannot be obtained. The best news is that quilt appraisals are not that expensive. While fees vary by appraiser, my charge is $30 per appraisal.
